Theme Competitive aerospace

The integrated approach to challenges around accessibility, living environment and sustainable air transport is fostering the emergence of new products and markets, which are strengthening the competitive position of the Netherlands.

NLR helps governmental authorities, the aviation sector and society to ensure aviation operations remain competitive, now and in the future, and to make civil and military aviation, and society, safer. We offer insight into changes in new technologies, for safety and security for instance, and into operational concepts, organisation, regulation and safety oversight in the aerospace industry. We also propose solutions for reducing costs in aviation operations, for expanding airspace capacity and for maximising the reliability and resilience of aviation operations, within societally acceptable limits.

  • Showcase: Next generation, low emission aircraft

    A great deal of applied research is still needed to put a new type of passenger aircraft into production in 2035 and to adapt the airport infrastructure accordingly. The same applies to UAM and future military platforms.

  • Societal challenge 2035

    NLR wants to enable the Dutch aviation industry to have a share in the existing UAM supply chains in 2035, as well as in the development and production of the next generation low emission aircraft and in programmes for the next generation helicopters.

  • Goal 2025

    En route to this future position of the Dutch aviation industry, in 2025 we will present a technology demonstrator. This will be a reshaped aircraft wing flap with integrated status and condition monitoring, to enhance the efficiency of a new platform and prevent unnecessary maintenance.

  • Showcase: An efficient and resilient aviation system

    Optimal performance of airport operations control, as well as an overhaul of the airspace, are needed in order to handle air traffic more efficiently and at lower operational costs, also in the event of disruptions. To achieve this, some essential interim steps are needed up until 2025.

  • Societal challenge 2025

    Together with the aviation sector and the government, NLR wants to deliver solutions that will greatly improve the efficiency and resilience of the aviation system.

  • Goal 2025

    In 2025, NLR will provide the building blocks for a new operational concept that will allow for fixed approach routes, the integration of manned and unmanned aviation, and optimally performing airport operations control.

  • Showcase: Strengthening the ecosystem of space companies in the Netherlands

    NLR is committed to strengthening the ecosystem of space companies in the Netherlands. In doing so we focus on the fast growing market for small satellites, launchers, robust PNT (Positioning, Navigation, and Timing) services and the application of earth observation. In partnership with these companies, technological innovations can be developed and brought to market within a national, ESA and EU framework.

  • Societal challenge

    NLR wants to help build upon the good position of the Dutch space industry in the area of small satellites, launchers and space applications with the development of distinct, technologically advanced capabilities.

  • Goal 2025

    In collaboration with universities and market parties, in 2025 we will demonstrate the development of a miniaturised high resolution instrument with on-board artificial intelligence-based payload data processing and an autonomous data processing chain. With this, we also contribute towards the objectives of the interdepartmental mission ‘Security in Space’ under the Knowledge and Innovation Agenda (KIA) Security.
