When the going gets tough
With great anticipation, I look forward to the Tweede Kamer elections on 29 October. Even the ballot paper itself is impressive, with over a thousand candidates spread across 27 parties. The political debate is dominated by a wide range of themes, with opinions often poles apart. This also applies within the field of Royal NLR – Netherlands Aerospace Centre. Should Lelystad Airport remain open for both defence and civil aviation, or should it remain closed for commercial flights? And how do we make aviation more sustainable – and who will foot the bill? These are just a few examples of the many ambitions outlined in party manifestos.

What about CO2 emissions and flight distance?
Over a fortnight ago, PVV, VVD, NSC and BBB presented their Outline Agreement. The Budget Annex shows that the parties want to differentiate the current air passenger tax by distance, with the ticket tax on longer flights becoming higher than that on shorter flights. The agreement does not explicitly specify what the incoming cabinet considers a ‘short’ or a ‘long-haul’ flight.

Details are not laughable
I will confess right away: I’m not much of a Lubach fan. However justified his coverage of topics, and regardless of how well the editors often research these topics, the jokes and effects do more harm than good with me.

Blog: The world is getting less circular. But what about aviation?
According to the Circularity Gap report, the world has become less circular than a year ago. This alarming fact comes as a surprise when compared to the rising interest in and popularity of the circular economy concept, not to mention the volume of research being done on this topic – also within the aviation sector. During the Circular Economy Week (6-11 February), have a look at the steps NLR has made in a year towards the ambition of becoming the Circular Economy ambassador for the Dutch aviation sector.

Blog: The Netherlands loses battle for space
5 years ago on 13 October 2017, climate satellite instrument Tropomi was launched – a great day for the Netherlands and crucial for global climate research. The instrument, which maps the entire Earth’s atmosphere every day, was the icing on the cake for a progressive and innovative Dutch space policy. We led the way in Europe. Now, five years later, the Netherlands is in danger of losing the lead and dangling at the back of the pack in terms of investment. With the upcoming European Space Agency (ESA) ministerial conference in Paris, we need to get back on track and accelerate. Climate, defence, cybersecurity and food security are global issues for which space is decisive for solutions, influence and security of countries. Continued investments in new satellite instruments, however, is a must. We must not lose this battle.

Blog: An addition to the sustainable development goals
On October 31st the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) started in Glasgow. And the news is full of articles reminding us all, once again, the impact of all human activities on the climate and the desperate need to change. Criticism is raised against those participants who travelled to Glasgow by plane. As it happens more often this illustrates, the aviation sector is targeted as the “evil” industry.

Blog: Fit for 55!
Last Wednesday, the European Commission presented ‘Fit for 55%’, a package for the practical implementation of the EU’s Green Deal. In a previous blog post, I looked at a much-repeated misconception concerning kerosene tax. Now I wish to consider the question of to what extent the new package can boost the sustainability of the aviation industry.

Blog: Kerosene tax: what exactly is the deal?
As part of the set of measures proposed by the European Commission to meet the 2030 CO2 reduction target – ‘Fit for 55%’ – the topic of kerosene tax is back on the political agenda. In this blog, I will try to clarify the laws and regulations on this matter and correct a common misunderstanding.
