De SFD is gebaseerd op een schaalmodel van 1:8,5 van een Airbus A320 en heeft zeer nauwkeurige vluchttestinstrumentatie voor het uitvoeren van metingen tijdens windtunnel- en vluchttests. Meer dan 150 parameters worden geregistreerd. Het overall SFD-project wordt geleid door ONERA en heeft als doel om geschaalde vluchttesting te valideren om disruptieve technologie\u00ebn te testen en te laten rijpen die significante reducties in energieverbruik mogelijk maken, wat nodig is om duurzame luchtvaart te versnellen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Op 30 maart 2022 werd een succesvolle eerste vlucht gemaakt op de luchtbasis Deelen (NL). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De SFD werd bediend door de NLR-vluchtploeg vanuit een cockpit op de grond. Na een serie kwalificatievluchttests in Nederland zal de SFD worden overgebracht naar Itali\u00eb om later dit jaar missievluchttests uit te voeren. Na de missievluchten zal de SFD opnieuw worden gebruikt om Distributed Electric Propulsion (DEP) te testen en te laten rijpen voor toekomstige grote passagiersvliegtuigen.
