Het biedt namelijk verschillende voordelen voor de luchtvaartsector. Zo kan waterstof fossiele brandstoffen vervangen en daarmee koolstofemissies tijdens vluchten en gedurende de hele levenscyclus elimineren. Bovendien produceert waterstof, wanneer het wordt gebruikt in brandstofcellen, geen NOx en deeltjes. Ook wanneer het in een turbine-motor wordt verbrand, leidt dit tot zeer lage deeltjesemissies en minder NOx-emissies, mits het verbrandingssysteem goed is afgesteld.
