De groei in de luchtvaart laat elke 15 jaar een verdubbeling zien. Hoe kunnen we die groei mogelijk maken en tegelijkertijd de veiligheid vergroten en de milieueffecten verminderen? En: hoe kan de capaciteit van luchthavens toenemen zonder dat dit ten koste gaat van de leefbaarheid van de omgeving? NLR houdt zich hier al decennia mee bezig en kijkt daarbij ook naar de wat verdere toekomst. Zo is NLR betrokken geweest bij het Europese project ‘The Endless Runway’. Dit radicaal nieuwe luchthavenconcept houdt in dat een cirkelvormige\u00a0 landingsbaan met een diameter van ongeveer 3,5 km rondom een luchthavengebouw wordt aangelegd. Zo’n luchthaven neemt daardoor slechts een derde van de oppervlakte in van een conventionele luchthaven.\u00a0 Een ander voordeel is dat vliegtuigen altijd kunnen landen of opstijgen, onafhankelijk van de windrichting: er is altijd een punt te vinden waar geen dwarswind is.\u00a0 Bovendien kunnen landende vliegtuigen om woongebieden heen worden geleid, omdat ze niet afhankelijk zijn van een vaste aanvliegroute. Tot slot kunnen er meerdere vliegtuigen tegelijk opstijgen en landen, wat de capaciteit van de luchthaven vergroot.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
