Koninklijke NLR vloog in 2019 als eerste met een drone op gasvormig waterstof in het Nederlandse luchtruim als onderdeel van het HYDRA I-project. Met HYDRA II behaalde NLR opnieuw een Nederlandse primeur door in augustus 2025 een <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nlr.org\/nl\/newsroom\/nieuws\/eerste-dronevlucht-op-vloeibare-waterstof-een-primeur-in-nederland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">drone op vloeibaar waterstof te laten vliegen<\/a>. Dit succes markeert een belangrijke mijlpaal in de zoektocht naar alternatieve brandstoffen en baant de weg voor de transitie naar duurzame luchtvaart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">De uitdaging<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Waterstof maakt langere vluchten en grotere afstanden mogelijk dan met batterijen alleen, en is daarom een essenti\u00eble stap op weg naar een duurzame en alternatieve brandstof. In dit kader zijn veiligheidsprocedures ontwikkeld voor het omgaan met en opereren van waterstofsystemen. Deze kunnen door andere (drone) partijen en regelgevende instanties worden gebruikt als referentie. Dit zal uiteindelijk ook de schaalbaarheid van deze systemen naar bemande vliegtuigen vergemakkelijken. Daarnaast bieden de uitkomsten van de analyse van de elektrische architectuur en het thermisch beheersysteem voor waterstofopslag bij extreem lage temperaturen waardevolle informatie voor fabrikanten bij de ontwikkeling van brandstofcellen en tanks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wat we hebben gedaan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Om de HYDRA II-drone op vloeibaar waterstof te kunnen laten vliegen, ontwikkelde NLR de benodigde infrastructuur en ontwierp een conditioneringssysteem met waterstofaandrijving. De drone is uitgerust met een aandrijfsysteem, bestaande uit een brandstofcel, cryogene tank en warmtewisselaar. Verder voerde NLR veiligheidsanalyses en testprocedures uit en deed het team praktische ervaring op met de systemen, waarmee de interne processen verder zijn verfijnd.
