De voortstuwingssystemen van Dawn Aerospace maken gebruik van zelf-drukvormende brandstoffen, waardoor er geen heliumdrukmiddelen en brandstofmanagementapparaten nodig zijn. Dit maakt flexibele, op maat gemaakte tankontwerpen mogelijk zonder extra systemen, waardoor de voortstuwingssystemen van Dawn eenvoudiger, sneller te produceren en kosteneffectiever zijn. Dankzij deze flexibiliteit kan Dawn inspelen op verschillende klantbehoeften. Het project draagt bij aan de doelstellingen van het Nederlandse ruimtevaartbeleid op de NSO-routekaart voor satellietsystemen, en sluit aan bij de doelstellingen van ESA.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">De uitdaging<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Het doel van dit project was om titanium brandstoftanks te ontwikkelen voor middelgrote satellieten met behulp van <em>Additive Manufacturing<\/em> (AM) van metaal. Deze ontwikkeling is belangrijk ter voorbereiding op een mogelijk verbod op hydrazine. Daarom richtte het project zich op het gebruik van industrieel beschikbare brandstoffen met een lage toxiciteit. Een ander doel is gewichtsvermindering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignwide has-background is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"background-color:#eff5fb\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">De oplossing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Er werden testexemplaren en kwalificatietanks van titanium geproduceerd. Deze testartikelen zijn getest op kwalificatieniveau voor representatieve druk- en trilbelastingen. Geen van de testresultaten vertoonden afwijkingen. Bovendien werden er geen compatibiliteitsproblemen met brandstoffen gevonden.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Onze aanpak<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-f0342b05 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\" style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: inherit; background-color: var(--wp--preset--color--white); font-weight: inherit;\">De compatibiliteit met brandstoffen werd onderzocht door middel van verschillende testen op monsters die met <em>additive manufacturing <\/em>gemaakt waren. Er werden trekproeven uitgevoerd om ontwerpwaarden vast te stellen. De prestaties van het materiaal werden in verschillende richtingen en na onderdompeling in brandstof ge\u00ebvalueerd. Er werden lektesten uitgevoerd op vlakke monsters met geprinte oppervlaktescheuren.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Het materiaal moest drukverlagende lekkage vertonen in plaats van onstabiele scheurgroei. Er werden ook druktesten uitgevoerd, waaronder proefdruk-, cyclische druk- en barstdruktesten.
