Innovation and Safety: the Future of Non-Kinetic Operations
Defence and safety are undergoing a period of fundamental change. The rise of new technologies is changing the nature of conflict, with a growing focus on non-kinetic activities such as cyber attacks, influence through social media, and the disruption and manipulation of electromagnetic signals. These developments pose new challenges for defence organisations, making it essential to find innovative solutions to ensure safety. NLR supports Defence with knowledge and expertise to remain effective in non-kinetic operations.

Cosmic radiation threatens the reliability of aircraft systems
Recently, a remarkable incident made the news: thousands of Airbus aircraft worldwide were grounded after cosmic radiation disrupted digital electronic systems. A problem long familiar in space applications is becoming increasingly relevant for aviation. Ongoing digitalisation is making modern systems more vulnerable to invisible radiation from space.

Opening of the Energy to Propulsion Test Facility aftermovie
On 28 November 2025, NLR officially opened the Energy to Propulsion Test Facility (EPTF) at NLR in Marknesse. The EPTF facilitates research to accelerate sustainable propulsion systems of aircraft. The new test facility is an important step in the innovation process. It bridges the gap between scientific research and practical implementation by companies. This unique facility offers researchers from NLR and other knowledge institutions, as well as startups, SMEs, and industrial parties, the opportunity to conduct tests on hydrogen-electric propulsion systems.

From cybersickness to effective training: exploring VR and MR
At NLR, we explore how virtual and mixed reality can transform flight simulation and the human factors involved. Simulators can be hindered by cyber sickness, a form of motion sickness that can occur when there is a mismatch between the motion you see in the virtual world and the motion you feelin the real world. Our research focuses on reducing that mismatch, so pilots can train longer, more effectively, and more comfortably. NLR tested three visual conditions: regular VR, VR-grid and Mixed reality.
