Programme
Emerging technologies
This programme is the breeding ground for new technologies and ideas within NLR. NLR invests in technologies of the future that are widely deployable for NLR and that could have a huge impact on the way that we live, learn, work and produce. Consider, for instance, virtualisation, digitisation, automation, AR/VR, (explainable) artificial intelligence (AI) including machine learning and deep learning, distributed ledger technology such as blockchain, and advanced data analytics. We identify emerging technologies and appraise how these will develop. We then link these with topics and programmes that are relevant for NLR and our stakeholders and partners.
“ A nursery for new technology”
Programme leader Harmen van der Ven on the Emerging technologies knowledge programme
New technologies can change our world drastically, and that can affect aviation too. But how can we make the best use of that technology in aerospace? What are the opportunities and what are the risks? That is what NLR’s Emerging Technologies knowledge programme is looking at.

Some projects
Emerging technologies events
We have organised two internal events to share knowledge about AI applications in aerospace and emerging material technologies. These workshops have provided valuable lessons on how to effectively stimulate innovation. Additionally, we have hosted an external event with innovation groups from government, defence, TO2, and industry. The aim was to exchange experiences on technology scouting and innovation management, and to take a step towards forming an innovation network. The interactive day was well-received and offers prospects for shaping a national innovation network. We are pleased to have taken these initiatives and look forward to further collaboration and innovation.

Quantum Technology in the aerospace domain
Our project focuses on identifying relevant quantum technology (QT) for Defence in the aerospace domain over the next ten years. We aim to determine which QT is most mature and relevant, enabling us to conduct targeted research on its application. The project lays the foundation for the knowledge required to effectively utilise QT. As a result, we will present a research agenda for the next five years, outlining the necessary steps to successfully apply QT in the aerospace domain for Defence.

GIANCE
The GIANCE project focuses on developing a platform for the production of graphene-modified materials with enhanced properties. NLR is collaborating with partners such as Dawn and Boeing to create high-performance composites for the aerospace industry. Our goal is to create materials with improved high-temperature resistance and lighter lightning protection. These innovations will enhance the performance and sustainability of aircraft and other applications. With GIANCE, we are contributing to the development of new generations of materials for various sectors, including automotive, energy, and water treatment.
