Resilience Week: NLR and TNO join forces for a safer future

2 minutes read

From cyber attacks to espionage, from disinformation to disrupting vital infrastructure – the Netherlands is being tested on its resilience more and more often. Today's security issues are complex and affect all sectors. Cooperation is not a choice, but a necessity. That is why NLR and TNO are organising the Resilience Week from 27 to 31 October: a joint initiative that raises awareness amongst employees of their role in strengthening national resilience.

Resilience requires direction, knowledge, and connection

The international security situation is changing rapidly. Within the Ministry of Defence, the focus is on its core task: protecting the Netherlands and its allies. As strategic partners of the Ministry of Defence, NLR and TNO are taking their responsibility. Together, they are combining knowledge, technology, and cooperation – between government, industry, and knowledge institutions – to make the Netherlands safer and more resilient.

“The world has become a lot more uncertain in recent years. We do not know what will happen tomorrow, next week, or next year, and it is precisely this uncertainty that we need to prepare for better,” says Hendrik Jan van Veen, Managing Director TNO Defence & Security. Resilience is essential in this regard: not only for organisations, but also for each individual. Only then can we continue to support our partners and stay afloat in uncertain times.”

A society that can withstand challenges

During the Resilience Week, NLR and TNO will take their employees on a week-long journey of interactive sessions, inspiring examples from practice, and knowledge sharing. The goal is to increase awareness, share insights, and collaborate on solutions that contribute to a resilient organisation and society.

“The challenges of today must be solved jointly. By combining our forces, sharing knowledge, and implementing solutions, we are building a society that is better equipped to withstand threats and recover more quickly when necessary. I hope our initiative will also inspire other organisations,” says Egbert Smit, Project Director Defence at NLR.

Stronger together

The Resilience Week is a unique example of how applied research organisations can bring in technological and scientific expertise and also actively contribute to national security. By joining forces, we demonstrate that resilience is not just about technology or policy, but also about people, insights, and cooperation. Together, we are preparing the Netherlands for tomorrow – with knowledge, technology, and human resources.

Clearing the skies: why space debris demands action now

As the number of satellites in orbit grows, so does the challenge of keeping space safe and sustainable. What was once a vast and largely empty domain is rapidly becoming congested with hazardous debris. Without coordinated action, the very infrastructure that underpins modern society is at risk. The growing debris problem requires collective efforts — including the Zero Debris Charter — aimed at securing the future of space.

Cosmic radiation threatens the reliability of aircraft systems

Recently, a remarkable incident made the news: thousands of Airbus aircraft worldwide were grounded after cosmic radiation disrupted digital electronic systems. A problem long familiar in space applications is becoming increasingly relevant for aviation. Ongoing digitalisation is making modern systems more vulnerable to invisible radiation from space.
