Resilience Week: NLR and TNO join forces for a safer future

From cyber attacks to espionage, from disinformation to disrupting vital infrastructure – the Netherlands is being tested on its resilience more and more often. Today's security issues are complex and affect all sectors. Cooperation is not a choice, but a necessity. That is why NLR and TNO are organising the Resilience Week from 27 to 31 October: a joint initiative that raises awareness amongst employees of their role in strengthening national resilience. 

Resilience requires direction, knowledge, and connection

The international security situation is changing rapidly. Within the Ministry of Defence, the focus is on its core task: protecting the Netherlands and its allies. As strategic partners of the Ministry of Defence, NLR and TNO are taking their responsibility. Together, they are combining knowledge, technology, and cooperation – between government, industry, and knowledge institutions – to make the Netherlands safer and more resilient.

“The world has become a lot more uncertain in recent years. We do not know what will happen tomorrow, next week, or next year, and it is precisely this uncertainty that we need to prepare for better,” says Hendrik Jan van Veen, Managing Director TNO Defence & Security. Resilience is essential in this regard: not only for organisations, but also for each individual. Only then can we continue to support our partners and stay afloat in uncertain times.”

A society that can withstand challenges

During the Resilience Week, NLR and TNO will take their employees on a week-long journey of interactive sessions, inspiring examples from practice, and knowledge sharing. The goal is to increase awareness, share insights, and collaborate on solutions that contribute to a resilient organisation and society.

“The challenges of today must be solved jointly. By combining our forces, sharing knowledge, and implementing solutions, we are building a society that is better equipped to withstand threats and recover more quickly when necessary. I hope our initiative will also inspire other organisations,” says Egbert Smit, Project Director Defence at NLR.

Stronger together

The Resilience Week is a unique example of how applied research organisations can bring in technological and scientific expertise and also actively contribute to national security. By joining forces, we demonstrate that resilience is not just about technology or policy, but also about people, insights, and cooperation. Together, we are preparing the Netherlands for tomorrow – with knowledge, technology, and human resources.

New Drone Operator training: Firda and NLR join forces

Firda Emmeloord MBO college and the applied research organisation NLR are partnering to launch a new MBO training programme 'Drone Operations Specialist' scheduled to start in 2026. Firda will deliver the educational component, while NLR will provide its expertise and facilities. This partnership adresses the growing need for qualified drone operators and supports the development of the new MITC in Marknesse.
