New TO2 magazine on the added value of applied research

2 minutes read

The 2024 edition of TO2MORROW magazine on behalf of the TO2 federation is available from today. With this joint impact report, the applied research organisations (TO2) Deltares, MARIN, NLR, TNO and WUR show in an accessible way how they ensure that their work can make a positive contribution to our society.

The five Dutch institutes for applied research Deltares, MARIN, NLR, TNO and WUR together form the TO2 federation. In their role as applied research organisations (in Dutch Toegepast Onderzoeksorganisaties, in short called TO2), the institutions translate scientific concepts and ideas into concrete solutions for governments, businesses and civil society organisations. In addition, the five institutes, through their public-private partnerships with companies, aim to increase R&D expenditure by companies in the Netherlands.

TO2MORROW

As in previous years, special results of the studies and cooperation of the five TO2 institutes are published once a year in the form of an accessible written ‘Impact Report’. With the publication of TO2MORROW, the institutions are demonstrating how they are working together to help businesses innovate and find solutions to societal challenges.

Innovation

The federation is supervised by the Ministry of Economic Affairs. In the magazine’s foreword, Minister Beljaarts expresses his pride in the work carried out by the research institutes: ‘Applied research institutions are strengthened and fueled by their ability to collaborate effectively with companies, universities and government, sharing knowledge widely and applying it quickly. These collaborations are key to our innovation prowess and make the Netherlands a frontrunner in technological progress and economic growth”.

Aerospace

NLR contributed to the articles ‘Drastic reduction of carbon emissions required for the Dutch aviation sector’ and ‘Working together in the airspace’, to the background text ‘Dutch industry fully hooked up onto “satcom”’, and to the short story ‘Steering with electric propulsion’.

We hope this magazine inspires you and provides new insights into the power of collaboration and innovation.

NLR introduces the Trim Excitation Device for precise wind tunnel testing

One of the main drivers behind improving the design of a tiltrotor is the aeroelastic instability characterised by strongly coupled wing-rotor movements, also known as whirl flutter. This phenomenon generally limits the maximum speed that the aircraft can achieve. Wind tunnel testing helps to understand and improve these sorts of aerodynamic properties of an aircraft. […]
