NLR launches its strategic plan for 2026 to 2029

1 minute read

Minister Karremans of Economic Affairs has approved NLR's new strategy. This strategy continues the current long-term themes, focusing on a safe society, strengthening the economy, and sustainability. National and international developments have led to a greater emphasis on safety and competitiveness in the new plan.

Technological innovations are following each other at a rapid pace, seemingly removing barriers for the international exchange of people, goods, capital, and information. This global interaction has brought us much prosperity, but in a time of increasing geopolitical tensions, it has also made us more aware of the associated vulnerabilities and consequences. With its new strategy for the period 2026 – 2029, NLR is addressing these challenges for our societal and economic security.

The three long-term themes of the current strategy period – focused on a safe and resilient society, strengthening competitiveness, and sustainable aerospace – remain unchanged. National and international developments have led to a shift in focus towards security and competitiveness, with particular attention to high-tech startups and scale-ups. The themes for the new strategy period are also more closely intertwined than before. Therefore, in the period from 2026 to 2029, we will focus more explicitly on the interfaces (ambitions) between the themes.

In the new strategy period, NLR will tackle pressing issues with a healthy balance between short-term and long-term research. The goal is to support the Dutch government and businesses in their search for innovative solutions. This strategy plan marks an important step forward for NLR, paving the way for a safer, more sustainable, and more competitive future for the Netherlands.
