Aerospace companies, centres of expertise, manufacturing industry, sector organisations and unions presented their joint vision of the future of aviation today. Through ten concrete commitments, we are playing our part in creating a future-proof aviation sector for all Dutch people. Together with the Dutch people, political circles, partners and sector players, the thirty-one parties are aiming to use these commitments as the foundations for creating a common action agenda for making Dutch aviation cleaner, quieter and more robust. Following on from that, the Dutch aerospace manufacturing industry has produced further details of one of the commitments.

Last Thursday at the RHIA Take-off Event, a renewed cooperation undertaking was signed. Over the coming year, the RHIA community will be emphasising six projects. The regional governments, the municipalities of Rotterdam and The Hague, and the province of Zuid-Holland are all behind the new course that the cooperative venture will take.

NLR and ROGER have signed an agreement to establish a small-scale hydrogen production and testing facility at NLR’s Marknesse location. Both partners share the vision that green hydrogen will emerge as a versatile and clean alternative to fossil fuels for mobility and heavy machinery.

To reduce the impact of aviation on the climate, the aviation industry needs to develop solutions that drastically reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. Hybrid electric flight is one of the cornerstones of our progress towards sustainable aviation. However, the significantly increased electric power levels associated with having electric propulsion on board yield both thermal and electromagnetic challenges.

NLR has completed the European research project on non-CO2 climate effects of aviation. This endeavor has yielded a large number of recommendations aimed at increasing the likelihood for stakeholders to implement operational improvements targeting the comprehensive climate impact of aviation. However, achieving voluntary implementation of these improvements by stakeholders presents challenges.
