Which services does the facility offer

The advanced manufacturing facility offers services for ‘high-tech, high-spec’ light weight structural concepts in metal, laminates and composites. These services cover the full range of product design, design (topology) optimization, production concept assessment and manufacturing of prototype structural concepts, smart wind tunnel models or even small series of products. 3D printing (metal additive manufacturing) will allow boosting the product performance due to the large freedom of design, application of complex internal structures leading to low weight by applying high performance materials.

The wind tunnel models can be instrumented with state of the art sensor systems for applications in subsonic, transonic, ambient, cryogenic and even icing conditions. They typically contain smart features such as remote controls, rotating systems, turbine powered simulators, (carbon composite) propeller blades, fan blades, rotor blades, advanced instrumentation, balances, pressure rakes and telemetry systems.

Aircraft manufacturers and their suppliers, wind tunnel operators, SMEs, industry in other transport sectors like automotive, rail and maritime.

Detailed description of the facility

Composite manufacturing
  • Resin Transfer Moulding (80 lt, 10 bar capacity)
  • Laminating and curing composites using autoclave processing (working volume 5.5 m3)
  • Cutting machine
  • For cutting sheets of various materials (e.g. pre-preg and dry fabrics)
  • Automated Fibre Placement of thermoset, thermoplastic materials and dry fibres (components with maximum diameter of 3.0 m and length of 6.5 m in horizontal spindle configuration and maximum diameter of 4.0 m and length of 2.0 m in vertical spindle configuration)
  • Press forming of thermoset and thermoplastic materials (product space 600x600mm, pressure 20 – 1000kN)
